A song that is a guilty pleasure
by Matt Sheret
What a lie. This isn’t a guilty pleasure at all, this song is absolutely fabulous. Listen to it. Listen to it and maybe don’t watch it, because watching it will be a little nudge that, yes, once we all though very very straight hair was attractive, and we were wrong about this, but we were also wrong about shoulder pads so lets not judge, yeah?
Listen to it. Its constituent parts were slammed together by Richard X, stirring together fragments of his hard drive like they’re soup in a cauldron, one that’s been simmering for decades and still hasn’t matured enough yet. He’s then given samples to three young girls, three sweet voices, and burned them like cheap whisky, aging them in seconds. Keysha and Mutya, once the waifs who lilted away on ‘Overload’, suddenly snarl their way through the speakers, hunting you down and baring their claws, joined – led? – by Heidi, the tall Valkyrie who – presumable – took Siobhan out back and showed her a downright nasty time before throwing her limp body into the dumpster.
Brilliant. Not a guilty pleasure at all, I don’t really believe in them. At least, not in the sense that you don’t want to own up to it. I mean, there are other songs, other music videos, one might watch and feel guilty about afterwards.
